Watch Prices

Watch prices amaze me.  Knowing watches inside and out, I can truly appreciate what goes into a watch and I can, in some cases appreciate a watch's value.  Most of the time I can't.

Story time.  Did you hear about this guy?  He was on some antiques show with is Rollie watch.  He bought it at the post exchange in 1975.  As the guy recalled, he spent a month's salary on the watch.  He still had the receipt where he paid $345.

After buying it, he decided it was too nice to wear so he locked it up in a safety deposit box and only checked in on it a few times.  There it sat, unworn and un-used.

All these years later, the Antique show host tells the guy that his watch is now worth $500,000 - $700,000.

The value of the watch, while impressive, isn't what struck me.  I did a little digging.  If the guy bought the watch in 1975 and spent a month's salary, that would have made him an E-1.  A buck private made $344 in 1975.

In 2020, a buck private makes $1785 per month.  Since 1973, that is a 419% increase.  So the Rollie Daytona should still cost a private's month salary, right?  Not exactly.  The watch now has a Suggested retail price of $13,150.  That is a 3,711% increase!  But that's not the worst part.  $13,150 won't buy it.  There is a long waiting list and the profiteers have hoarded them up and if you had to have it, you would be in it for better than $20k.  IF you found one for sale.

That strikes me as not quite right.  Now, at Respektiv, I'll never put together anything near as nice as that Rollie.  But I promise you this.  A buck private will always be able to design and purchase a Respektiv Timepiece.  It will be his unique piece and I'll make sure it is worth being proud of.
