How is this for a time capsule? A New In Box Bulova Accutron Tuning Fork watch from ≈1973. I have had this one tucked away in my safe for about 10 years. So I was told when I acquired it, A jewelry store was moving and when they moved out a display case, this treasure was found. It had fallen back there many years ago, left untouched. Everything is here, just like you would have bought it in 1973.
I have the outer box. Cardboard with some signs of deterioration. A few scratches and scuffs with the corners showing some wear but very presentable and no tears. Then we have the inner display box. This is in very good condition with only a few scuffs to the clear plastic cover. The blue velvet backing is starting to curl on the edges and the glue is beginning to fail.
I have the original booklet that appears to have never been touched. The book is copyrighted 1971, 72, 73. This is how I have guessed at the date of manufacture. The original lizard skin strap is perfect, straight and looks to have never been buckled. I removed it and put on a period correct strap so I could put the watch in a watch box without disturbing the original. The "Water Resistance" hang tag is still on the original strap held on by the string that has likely never been removed.
On the case back, the tag that states "Battery Inserted. See Booklet Before Setting" is still in place. There are signs of deterioration of this tag but it is still clearly legible.
The watch is nearly perfect and untouched. On the back, under close examination under a loop, you can see some marring on the case back ring where the battery has been removed. On the underside of the lugs, there is some marring where the strap has been removed and inserted. To the naked eye, these imperfections are hard to detect under normal lighting. The rest of the case, crystal and dial are perfect, like new condition.
The watch measures 34.5 mm across and 40.5 mm lug to lug. The strap is 18mm.
I last had this running about 10 years ago using a Renata 344 battery. Since it has been stored in a safe without the battery. Then it ran perfect. The hum of the tuning fork is very interesting. I have no reason to believe it wouldn't run perfect today if you chose to wake it up and run it. To me, I just don't believe it's worth scratching it to replace the battery.
